Samsung is reportedly developing an AGEs (Advanced Glycation Endproducts) index feature for its Galaxy Watch series. This feature aims to provide users with an index to track their biological aging process, which could potentially predict the risk of diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. The AGEs index could make Samsung Galaxy Watches an early warning device for cardiovascular and diabetes risk.
The AGEs index is currently in the experimental stage, as shown in the Samsung Health app with a (Labs) label. The feature works by creating an index of readings to give users a sense of their personal metabolic health, making it easier to understand their overall biological aging process.
Diagnoptics, a potential partner for Samsung in this project, states that AGEs play a significant role in the development of chronic age-related diseases such as diabetes, renal failure, and cardiovascular disease. AGEs are said to predict the risk of diabetes, heart attack, and stroke, and substantial physical exercise is associated with lower levels of AGEs.
It is speculated that the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 series could include a way to measure AGEs optically and non-invasively, with the readings forming the basis of the AGEs index. This would allow users to monitor their risk of certain diseases like diabetes without actively providing them with a measurement value.
It is not yet clear if older Galaxy Watches can also measure AGEs, or if the Galaxy Watch 7 series will support continuous glucose monitoring. There is also another UI screen within Samsung Health for Continuous Glucose Monitoring, but there is no real information to draw any conclusion.
Samsung has not yet disclosed its larger plans for this feature, and more information is expected to be revealed as the launch of the Galaxy Watch 7 series approaches. The Galaxy Watch 7 series is expected to be launched at Samsung Unpacked on July 10, 2024.
