Apple expects AI features to boost iPhone 16 sales by 10M units

The tech giant Apple is anticipating a substantial increase in the sale of its upcoming iPhone 16 model compared to last year’s model, iPhone 15. According to Chinese site CTEE, Apple has amplified its order of A18 chips from TSMC from 80-90 million for iPhone 15 to 90-100 million for the iPhone 16 models. This significant increase suggests the expectations of increased sales for the newest iPhone lineup.

Contrary to some presumptions, Apple is not reported to alter its chip strategy this year with all four iPhone models receiving the same A18 chip. Instead, it appears a change in naming convention only. The base and Plus models could receive a slightly updated version of the A17 Pro chip, labeled as A18, while the iPhone 16 Pro, and Pro Max will get a new labeled chip, the A18 Pro with advanced AI and graphics capabilities.

In addition to this, the headlining new feature of iOS 18, Apple Intelligence, will only be accessible on the iPhone 15 Pro, and Pro Max models. Therefore, if users own less-powered models such as the iPhone 15 base or Plus, they would need an upgrade to avail the new AI capabilities. Given that all the iPhone 16 models will support the feature, it is plausible for Apple to anticipate a 10 million increase in sales over the iPhone 15 line-up.
