In recent developments, Google has launched a smartwatch designed specifically for children aged 7-11, known as the Fitbit Ace LTE. This watch aims to keep children active, connected, and smartphone-free while providing a level of independence and parents’ peace of mind. Anil Sabharwal, Vice President of Product Management at Google, stated that their goal was to create a device that both children and parents would love.
During testing, the Fitbit Ace LTE demonstrated its ability to make staying in touch with children easier. Moreover, it also revealed the surprisingly high activity levels of children throughout the day. The device features a snap-on bumper, fun, interchangeable bands, and water resistance, even withstanding the “washing machine test.”
One of the standout features of the Fitbit Ace LTE is its built-in cellular connectivity using Google’s Fi network. This feature allows parents and children to call, message each other, and view the child’s real-time location on a map, but it is important to note that the device is not assigned a phone number; all calling and messaging must be done through the accompanying app.
Google has taken privacy seriously in the design of this device. Location data is deleted within 24 hours, activity data within 35 days, and there are no third-party apps available for download or installation. Data is not used for ads or any other purposes.
The Fitbit Ace LTE also boasts built-in games, but these games can only be played by moving around first. Google believes that these games offer an immersive, fun experience.
Overall, the Fitbit Ace LTE presents an excellent opportunity for parents to keep track of and communicate with their children without compromising on privacy or independence. This device could be a valuable tool in helping children navigate the digital world while allowing them to build their own sense of independence in a safe and fun manner. The Fitbit Ace LTE costs $229, with an additional $10 per month for cellular service. There is currently a promotion available where the first year of service can be purchased for 50% off, or $60. The device is available at the Google Store and Amazon.
