Hands-on: Sony's New MR Headset Impresses with Clarity & Ergonomics, But Still Needs Tuning

Sony’s upcoming enterprise headset, the SRH-S1, is a compact and ergonomically designed device powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor. It offers a high-resolution display of 13.6MP per-eye, with 96% DCI-P3 color coverage, surpassing the resolution and color accuracy of the Apple Vision Pro. The SRH-S1 features unique controllers, including a star-shaped pointer and a ring controller that goes on your finger.

The headset’s design includes hardware-adjustable IPD, a flip-up visor, rear-mounted battery for balance, and eye-relief adjustment. However, the field-of-view, while not expansive, was not too small to be useful. The display looked impressively sharp, but the content shown during the demo was not optimized for standalone use, resulting in a choppy experience.

The controllers, while innovative, need improvement, particularly in terms of tracking and button placement. The ring controller, in particular, had issues with jitter, making it difficult for precise input. The star-shaped controller, on the other hand, felt more precise due to its design and natural pointing capability.

Sony plans to launch the SRH-S1 later this year, but pricing, regional availability, and software compatibility have not been announced yet. The headset is designed to work with Siemens NX, a suite of CAD tools, but it’s unclear if it will support other software platforms or standards, such as OpenXR. The passthrough view is still being worked on.
