Small businesses in south central Wisconsin, specifically those that rely on lakes and rivers, are experiencing hardships due to the recent erratic weather patterns. One such business is Sugar River Outfitters, a kayak and canoe rental service located on the Sugar River. Owner Kelly Hickman has faced challenges as the region shifted from two years of drought to constant rain, resulting in frequent closures. When the water level rises, the company must cancel trips to ensure safety for customers, causing income loss and dissatisfaction among clients.
Even a single day of rain can raise the water level on the Sugar River significantly, and the river, which typically reaches people’s shins at the Sugar River Outfitters landing near the Hop Garden Tap Room in Paoli, can now reach well over their knees. This year, the business started offering hourly rentals at the community park in Belleville to mitigate these issues, but the upcoming 4th of July weekend remains uncertain due to the forecasted rain. If the weather turns out to be significant, the business could be forced to close again for the remainder of the weekend.
