The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 has introduced several user experience improvements, one of which is the enhanced fingerprint registration process. Previously, registering a new fingerprint on Galaxy Z Fold devices required unfolding the device, but with the Galaxy Z Fold 6, users can now register a new fingerprint while keeping the phone unfolded and using the cover screen. This change is a welcome improvement, as it eliminates the need to unfold the device during the registration process.
However, it remains unclear whether this feature will be exclusive to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 or if it will be extended to previous compatible Galaxy Z Fold models with the One UI 6.1.1 update. Given that all previous-generation Galaxy Z Fold phones use a side-mounted fingerprint reader from Goodix, it seems plausible that Samsung could bring this feature to older models.
There is a reported bug in the phone’s current firmware version that prevents users from registering their fingerprints during the initial setup process.
Samsung continues to use a side-mounted capacitive fingerprint reader on its foldable phones, such as the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold series. This choice is justified, as the side-mounted fingerprint reader is known for its accuracy, speed, and reliability. It can be accessed regardless of whether the phone is folded or unfolded.
In addition to fingerprint authentication, Samsung offers various user authentication systems, including alphanumeric, pattern, and PIN-based systems. These systems can be used to unlock the phone, secure sensitive apps like banking, and protect features like Secure Folder.
