Amazon Calls for Development of Global Rules for Responsible AI

Amazon, a leading American tech company, has emphasized the need for global alignment on responsible AI measures, a year after agreeing to the Biden administration’s voluntary commitments regarding AI. David Zapolsky, Amazon’s senior vice president of global public policy and general counsel, stated that it is possible to establish rules that protect against AI risks without hindering innovation.

To achieve this, Zapolsky suggested that all companies in the AI field should commit to responsible AI deployment. This could involve measures such as embedding invisible watermarks into AI tools to combat disinformation, as Amazon has done. Transparency is another crucial aspect, with companies like Amazon creating AI Service Cards to inform customers about the limitations, best practices, and safe application building of their AI services.

Collaboration and information sharing among companies and governments are also key to responsible AI, according to Zapolsky. He highlighted the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium, established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, as an example of such collaboration.

Zapolsky emphasized that for the U.S. and its allies to reap the benefits of AI while minimizing its risks, they must continue to work together to establish AI guardrails consistent with democratic values, promoting economic prosperity and security, ensuring global interoperability, fostering competition, and enhancing safe and responsible innovation.

On July 21, 2023, the White House announced that several tech companies, including Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI, had made voluntary commitments to help advance the safe, secure, and transparent development of AI technology. These commitments included measures aimed at better understanding the risks and ethical implications of AI, providing greater transparency, and restricting potential misuse.
